About indianapolis zoo

Few wedding venues offer an experience quite like the Indianapolis Zoo, located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis within White River State Park. The zoo is one of Indiana’s most distinctive wedding venues. As one of the few institutions in the world to be accredited as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden, it offers couples a setting unlike any other—where beautifully landscaped gardens, modern event spaces, skyline views, and unforgettable animal experiences come together to create a truly memorable wedding day. Originally opening in 1964 before moving to its current downtown location in 1988, the Zoo has become one of Indianapolis’ most recognizable landmarks and a favorite destination for couples looking for a wedding that’s both elegant and unique.

One of the reasons couples are drawn to the Indianapolis Zoo is its incredible variety of wedding spaces. Rather than offering just one ballroom or garden, the venue allows couples to customize nearly every part of their celebration. The beautifully landscaped White River Gardens provide a romantic outdoor setting for ceremonies, while indoor venues range from intimate rooms overlooking the downtown skyline to one-of-a-kind spaces where guests can celebrate alongside dolphins or enjoy private access to animal exhibits. Few venues can offer such an unforgettable experience while still maintaining an elegant atmosphere.

Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a celebration with several hundred guests, the Indianapolis Zoo offers flexible options to fit your vision. Outdoor ceremonies are often held in the picturesque Efroymson Wedding Garden surrounded by seasonal flowers and lush landscaping. Receptions may take place in the Hulman Riverhouse overlooking White River Gardens and the Indianapolis skyline, the dramatic Dolphin Gallery featuring underwater dolphin viewing, or the spacious Bicentennial Pavilion for larger celebrations. Depending on the space you choose, weddings can accommodate anywhere from around 100 guests to approximately 300 seated guests, giving couples plenty of flexibility as they plan their day.

Beyond its beautiful event spaces, one of the Zoo’s greatest advantages is the experience it creates for both couples and their guests. From private animal encounters to cocktail hours overlooking lush gardens, every part of the day feels memorable and different from a traditional ballroom wedding. Guests often leave talking about not only the ceremony and reception but also the incredible setting that surrounded the celebration. Hosting your wedding here also supports the Zoo’s wildlife conservation mission, adding another meaningful element to your day.

As a wedding photographer, the Indianapolis Zoo offers an incredible variety of portrait locations without ever needing to leave the property. The beautifully manicured White River Gardens provide colorful backdrops throughout the growing season, while downtown Indianapolis creates a stunning skyline just beyond the gardens. The glass architecture, winding pathways, water features, bridges, and lush landscaping allow couples to enjoy a gallery that feels diverse while remaining cohesive. Every season brings something different, from vibrant spring blooms and lush summer gardens to colorful autumn foliage and elegant winter architecture.

Some of my favorite portrait locations include the Efroymson Wedding Garden, the pathways throughout White River Gardens, the Hulman Riverhouse overlooking the skyline, the historic White River pedestrian bridge, and the waterfront paths surrounding the property. Couples who choose the Dolphin Gallery also enjoy one of the most unique reception backdrops in Indiana, creating unforgettable photographs as dolphins swim behind the celebration.
