Indiana State House

Historic Ceremony Venue in Downtown

Indianapolis, Indiana

A complete guide to wedding ceremonies at the Indiana State House, featuring real weddings, favorite photo locations, planning tips, and inspiration.

About the Indiana State House

For couples dreaming of a ceremony surrounded by timeless architecture and Indiana history, the Indiana State House offers one of the most breathtaking settings in the state. Completed in 1888, this National Historic Landmark has stood at the heart of downtown Indianapolis for well over a century. Its soaring marble staircases, grand rotunda, hand-carved limestone, and magnificent stained-glass skylights create an atmosphere of elegance that few ceremony locations can match.

Rather than serving as a traditional wedding venue, the Indiana State House is best known as an unforgettable place to exchange vows before continuing the celebration elsewhere. Many couples choose to host their ceremony inside the stunning South Atrium before traveling to one of downtown Indianapolis’ premier reception venues, such as the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Union Station Grand Hall, or the Conrad Indianapolis. This allows couples to enjoy the beauty and significance of one of Indiana’s most iconic landmarks while customizing the remainder of their wedding day.

The architectural beauty of the State House is what makes it so extraordinary. Towering Corinthian columns, polished marble floors, ornate brass fixtures, and the spectacular central dome create a dramatic backdrop that requires very little additional décor. Every direction offers incredible craftsmanship, making the building feel elegant, historic, and undeniably timeless. Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a larger gathering of family and friends, the space provides an unforgettable setting for one of life’s most meaningful moments.

As a wedding photographer, the Indiana State House is one of my favorite ceremony locations because every corner of the building offers remarkable opportunities for portraits. The grand marble staircases create dramatic bridal images, while the soaring rotunda fills with beautiful natural light throughout the day. The limestone columns, historic hallways, and intricate architectural details create timeless photographs that feel both sophisticated and uniquely Indianapolis.

Some of my favorite portrait locations include the grand staircase, the rotunda beneath the dome, the marble corridors, the stately exterior entrance, and the surrounding downtown streets. Monument Circle is only a short walk away, making it easy to incorporate some of Indianapolis’ most recognizable landmarks into your wedding portraits before heading to your reception venue.

One of the greatest advantages of choosing the Indiana State House is its location. Situated in the center of downtown Indianapolis, it’s just minutes from many of the city’s finest hotels and reception venues, allowing couples to enjoy a seamless transition from ceremony to celebration. Guests also appreciate the convenience of nearby parking, accommodations, and restaurants, making it an excellent choice for weddings with family and friends traveling from out of town.

For couples searching for a ceremony location that’s rich in history, breathtaking in architecture, and truly unique to Indianapolis, the Indiana State House offers an experience unlike any other. It’s a place where timeless elegance, meaningful moments, and iconic surroundings come together to create photographs—and memories—that will be cherished for generations.
