Once a bustling railroad station located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, Union Station Grand Hall is one of the city’s most iconic and recognizable wedding venues. Originally opened in 1888 as one of the nation’s first union railroad stations, this National Historic Landmark has been beautifully preserved, allowing couples to celebrate their wedding day surrounded by more than a century of history and architectural grandeur. Today, the Grand Hall blends its rich past with modern event amenities, creating an unforgettable setting for elegant weddings in the heart of the city.

The moment guests step inside the Grand Hall, they’re greeted by soaring 185-foot barrel-vaulted ceilings, intricate stained-glass windows, exposed brick, and impressive Romanesque architecture. Every detail of the space feels timeless, offering a dramatic backdrop that requires very little additional décor. Whether you’re planning a formal black-tie celebration or a classic romantic wedding, the historic architecture provides a sense of sophistication that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else in Indiana.

One of the reasons couples are drawn to Union Station is its ability to host every part of the wedding day in one location. Couples can prepare in private suites before exchanging vows beneath the hall’s magnificent vaulted ceiling or outdoors on the adjacent lawn overlooking the city. Following the ceremony, the Grand Hall seamlessly transforms into an elegant reception space where guests can enjoy dinner, dancing, and celebration beneath one of the most breathtaking ceilings in Indianapolis. As a wedding photographer, Union Station is one of my favorite venues because every corner offers something visually unique. The Grand Hall itself is breathtaking, with natural light filtering through the stained-glass windows during the day and warm architectural lighting creating a romantic atmosphere throughout the evening. The dramatic brick walls, towering ceilings, and elegant chandeliers provide timeless backdrops that never go out of style.

Beyond the ballroom, downtown Indianapolis offers countless opportunities for portraits just steps from the venue. Monument Circle, nearby historic buildings, tree-lined streets, and the city’s modern skyline all create beautiful variety within a short walk. ​Some of my favorite portrait locations include the Grand Hall staircase, the stained-glass windows, the brick archways throughout the station, the exterior historic entrance, and the surrounding downtown streets at sunset. As evening falls, the glowing city lights and beautifully illuminated architecture create stunning opportunities for dramatic nighttime portraits that perfectly capture the energy of downtown Indianapolis.
